WITS Sterkfontein Caves reopens

The University of the Witwatersrand proudly celebrated the spectacular re-opening of the iconic Sterkfontein Caves on the 15th April 2025 with a vibrant and unforgettable launch event. This world-renowned Cradle of Humankind site has undergone a remarkable transformation, unveiling a beautifully upgraded museum and state-of-the-art preparator’s laboratory, now accompanied by a captivating new temporary exhibition.
GENUS is honoured to have played a pivotal role in this revitalisation, contributing to the modernisation of the laboratory facilities and the installation of striking, informative new signage along the walkway and within the cave itself—enhancing the visitor experience and bringing fresh life to this historic site.
Our commitment doesn’t stop there. As proud partners in Phase 2 of this ambitious initiative, we are driving forward dynamic outreach and education efforts designed to ignite curiosity, inspire learning, and ensure that the awe-inspiring story of human origins reaches communities across South Africa—and resonates far beyond our borders. This project reinforces South Africa’s critical and irreplaceable role in shaping global understanding of our shared evolutionary heritage.

Director of GENUS, Professor Jennifer Botha, together with Associate Professor Dominic Stratford—whose visionary leadership and unwavering dedication have been instrumental in driving the upgrade forward—have been central to the success of this transformative project.
